This article walks through where each technology is the right call — and where the controller choice changes with the panel choice. By the end you'll know whether you want LCD, LED, or a quote on both.
The technology in one paragraph each
- LCD video walls: LFD panels with 0.88–3.5 mm bezels (Samsung, LG, Panasonic). Mature, cheaper per square foot, easy to service tile-by-tile.
- Direct-view LED: SMD or COB modules with no bezel (Planar PFI, Planar VDS). Pixel pitch decides resolution and viewing distance.
Visual quality
- Bezels: LCD has them — even 0.88 mm bezels are visible at 6 ft. LED is seamless.
- Brightness: LCD ~500 nits (LG UH5Q / UL5Q); LED 600–1000+ nits (Planar PFI / VDS).
- Contrast: LED wins comfortably (5000:1 PFI, 10000:1 VDS) — the win is biggest in dark / broadcast environments.
- Colour: both hit BT.709 95 %+ at the pro tier.
Sizing and pixel pitch
- LCD: pick panel size and grid (2×2, 3×3…). Resolution is fixed per tile.
- LED: pick pixel pitch by viewing distance. 0.9 mm under 8 ft, 1.5 mm at 8–14 ft, 1.8 mm at 14–20 ft, 2.5 mm at 20+ ft.
- Native FHD or 4K canvas with LED is just maths — the cabinet count gives you the resolution.
Controller differences — this is where buyers get caught out
- LCD video wall controller drives discrete HDMI/DP outputs to each tile (Drita DT4000, SEADA SolarWall Micro, Jupiter Catalyst V).
- LED video wall controller: the wall has a receiving-card chain (sending card + receiving cards). Many "LED video wall controllers" sold are really sending-card processors (Novastar, Colorlight). For mixed-environments you still want a video wall processor upstream feeding the sending card.
- Practical pattern at VVT: Catalyst V or DT4000 → sending card → Planar LED wall.
Total cost of ownership
- LCD: lower CapEx, panel replacements every 5–7 years, backlight degradation visible.
- LED: higher CapEx, 100,000-hour module life (Planar VDS), modular service — replace one module not a whole panel.
- Power: LED draws more peak; LCD is steadier across the day.
Comparison table

- Brightness
- LCD: ~500 nits · LED: 600–1000+ nits
- Pixel pitch
- LCD: fixed by panel · LED: selectable 0.78–2.5 mm
- CapEx
- LCD: lower · LED: higher
- Lifespan
- LCD: ~50,000 hrs · LED: 100,000 hrs (Planar VDS)
- Service
- LCD: panel swap · LED: module swap
- Controller
- LCD: DT4000 / SWMicro / Catalyst V · LED: same + sending-card upstream
- Best for
- LCD: branches, NOCs, signage · LED: broadcast, premium boardroom, lobbies, XR
Quick decision rules
- Indoor, < 25 sq ft, < 12-hour use, budget-led → LCD (LG UL5Q tiles + Drita DT4000).
- Indoor, branded / lobby, premium look → LED (Planar PFI 1.5 mm + Catalyst V).
- Broadcast / XR / virtual production → LED (Planar VDS COB).
- Tile-on-tile retail accent (3×3) → LCD (Samsung VM55 + SEADA SolarWall Micro).
How VVT helps
We carry both LG / Samsung / Panasonic LCD walls and Planar LED, plus the controllers that drive them — and we'll quote both options side-by-side so the choice is yours, not your vendor's.
