Category intro

Two workstations. Three workload classes.

The Z6 G5 is for the single-user AI / ray-tracing / VFX seat where GPU density wins. The Z8 G5 is for the workload where CPU cores win — simulations, large compositing scenes, batch rendering and multi-user data-science. Pick by the bottleneck, not the budget.

Specs below are pulled from HP's official Z6 G5 and Z8 G5 product pages. Final configuration (CPU SKU, GPU pairing, RAM tier, storage carrier) confirmed at quote stage.

Workload pairing

Pick the chassis by the bottleneck.

  • AI / ML training — Z6 G5 with 2× or 3× RTX 6000 Ada

GPU density wins. Three RTX 6000 Ada in a Z6 G5 delivers ≈ 4,371 AI TOPS — that's the highest GPU-per-chassis count in the Z range.

  • Real-time ray tracing / VFX — Z6 G5 (1–2 GPU) or Z8 G5

Most artists run a Z6 G5 with a single high-end GPU. Switch to Z8 G5 when scene complexity makes the CPU the limit, or when one workstation serves multiple shifts.

  • BIM, CAD, architectural visualisation — Z6 G5

Single-socket Xeon W9 with one RTX 6000 Ada handles Revit, Navisworks, Rhino, AutoCAD and v-Ray / Enscape comfortably. ECC memory keeps long sessions stable.

  • Simulation / batch rendering / heavy compositing — Z8 G5

When the limiting factor is CPU cores — fluid sims, FEA, heavy Nuke / Fusion compositing, large After Effects renders — the dual-socket Z8 is the right answer.

  • Data science / multi-user shared workstation — Z8 G5

64 cores and 1 TB DDR5 ECC let several analysts share one workstation with virtualised environments, or one analyst run very large in-memory datasets.

Common questions

The short answers.

Z6 G5 is single-socket (one Intel Xeon W9, up to 36 cores) with up to 3× RTX 6000 Ada — built for AI/ML, real-time ray tracing and VFX at one user. Z8 G5 is dual-socket (up to 64 cores across two Xeons) — the right call when CPU cores are the bottleneck: large simulations, heavy compositing, batch rendering and multi-user data-science stations.
